How poor mental wellbeing can affect the way you deal with money (source Money Advice Service)

Examples of the effects include:

  • Your income could reduce or stop completely if you cannot work or need to take some time off work.
  • You might spend money you can’t afford on things you don’t need to make yourself feel better, but then regret it afterwards.
  • You might feel anxious or stressed about doing things like talking on the phone, going to the bank or opening your bills.
  • You might feel worried, anxious and nervous about day-to-day financial decisions you need to make – and so avoid making them.
  • You might find that spending money or being in debt makes you feel anxious - even if you can afford to.
  • You might not have enough money to cover spending on essential items.
  • You might find it hard to concentrate or take in all the detailed information you need to make financial decisions.
  • You might forget to do things you need to do.

How to Survive Financial Stress (source NHS Moodzone)

  • Be active
    1. Spend time with friends, keep your CV up to date and pay bills you can afford to. If you don’t work, take up some form of exercise as it can improve your mental state if you're feeling low.
    2. Search for exercise classes and sports clubs close to where you live.
  • Face your fears
    • Seek advice on how to prioritise your debts. When people feel anxious, they sometimes avoid talking to people. Some people can lose their confidence about driving or travelling. If this starts to happen, facing up to these situations will generally make them easier.
  • Don't drink too much alcohol.
    • For some people with money worries, alcohol can become a problem. You may drink more than usual as a way of dealing with your emotions or just to fill time. But alcohol won't help you deal with your problems and could add to your stress.
  • Don't lose your daily routine
    • Get up at a regular time and stick to your routine. If you lose your routine, it can affect your eating: you may stop cooking, miss breakfast because you're still in bed or eat snacks instead of having proper meals.

The charity 'Mind' has a money and mental health section on its website, which includes advice on how to manage debt.

The biggest stressor for individuals is money matters. If you don’t feel in control of your finances, your finances can control you and take over.

There is nothing worse than trying to get through the day or trying to get to sleep and feeling stressed about money matters. Surprisingly if this sounds familiar you are not alone. Most of us do spend a large part of our day thinking about financial matters, in fact studies show we spend 3-4 hours of our working week thinking about money.

When money matters begin to affect your mental health, the easy option is to ignore it or pretend it isn’t happening. Leaving your mail unopened or carrying on spending and/or borrowing won’t solve anything. They’ll just make things worse. If cash is a concern and is making your days difficult, impacting your relationships confronting the reality can help lift the burden.

Here are four ways that can address your money worries:

  • Talk to someone
    • Suffering alone adds to the pressure. Share the situation with friends or family if you can. If you feel your money matters are just too personal to share with people you know, at your place of employment you may have access to an Employee Assistance Program (EAP). An EAP will have a financial counselling line where you can speak to a counsellor anonymously. Alternatively, you should be able to access assistance via government sponsored or non for profit organizations within your own communities. By just talking to someone they can help you see the problem with a clearer focus. Try and find free and impartial money advice near you
  • Get a clear view on your situation
    • If you’ve completely lost track of your spending, and you are feeling lost it’s even harder to find a way out. Though it could be scary to see the true extent of your problems, a simple budget will clearly show you how much you spend and where. There could be some simple ‘quick wins’; areas where you can instantly find places to save or cut back on. A proper perspective on the situation may leave you thinking the situation is not as bad as you thought it was.
  • Take it one step at a time
    • If there are so many outstanding bills and you feel overwhelmed by what to do next, take a deep breath and stop. Address one thing at a time, break your money matters into bite size pieces. You can address one bill at time, then move on to the next, and so on until you feel able to look at the bigger picture. Focus first on the priority expenses such as rent, food and utilities.
  • Make some simple changes
  • Though some of your money worries might be big, you might ease the pressure with some small and simple changes. You could free up extra cash by switching your phone company or changing to a discount supermarket or shopping online and limit yourself to buying the necessary.

You might be able to raise some money by selling things on online or at garage sales.

Money worries concerns all of us, some more than others. It’s important to acknowledge you have these and start taking small, positive steps to turn your situation around.

The third Monday of January is said to be the most depressing day of the year. Now, the idea of one day being worse than any other might feel like pseudo-science, but it’s certainly the case that financial pressures can come to the fore this month.

When money matters begin to affect your mental health, the easy option is to ignore it or pretend it isn’t happening. But leaving post unopened or carrying on spending won’t solve anything. They’ll just make things worse. If cash is a concern and is making your days difficult, confronting the reality can help lift the burden.

Here are four ways you can beat money worries:

  • Talk to someone
    • Suffering alone adds to the pressure. Share the situation with friends or family if you can. Even if they can’t help, just talking to someone could help you see the problem with a clearer focus. You may be able to get free and independent money advice from your employer’s employee assistance program. Alternatively, you should be able to access assistance via government sponsored or non-profit organisations.
  • Know exactly what the situation is
    • If you’ve lost track of your spending, it’s even harder to find a way out. Though it could be scary to see the true extent of your problems, a simple budget will clearly show you how much you spend and where. There could be some simple ‘quick wins’, where you can instantly find places to save or cut back.
  • Take it one at a time
    • If there are so many bills you feel overwhelmed by what to do next, stop. Take one concern at a time. You don’t need to solve it, but you might be able to make it less of a worry. Then move on to the next, and so on until you feel able to look at the bigger picture. Focus first on the priority expenses such as rent and bills.
  • Make some simple changes

Though some of your money worries might be big, you might ease the pressure with some small and simple changes. You could free up extra cash by switching your energy company or changing to a discount supermarket. You might be able to raise some money by selling things on online.

Her har du fire framgangsmåter for å ta tak i privatøkonomiske bekymringer:

  • Apportez quelques changements simples.

  • Få et klart overblik over din situation

  • Avance paso a paso.

Sok ember a hét nagy részében pénzügyeken gondolkozik.

Íme négy módszer, amellyel a pénzügyi gondjaidat kezelheted:

  • Lásd tisztán a helyzeted!
  • Vezess be néhány egyszerű változást!

There is nothing worse than trying to get through the day or trying to get to sleep and feeling stressed about money matters. Surprisingly if this sounds familiar you are not alone. Many people spend a large part of the day thinking about financial matters, in fact studies show we spend 3-4 hours of our working week thinking about money.

When money matters begin to affect your mental health, the easy option is to try to ignore it or pretend it isn’t happening.

Alternatively, you should be able to access assistance via government sponsored or non-for-profit organizations within your own communities.

    • Angustiarsi in solitudine aggiunge pressione.

Alternatively, you should be able to access assistance via government sponsored or non for profit organizations within your own communities.
Cep telefonu tarifenizi değiştirerek, indirim kampanyalarını takip ederek veya kendinizi sadece zorunlu alışverişler ile sınırlayarak maliyetlerinizi azaltabiirsiniz, You might be able to raise some money by selling things on online or at garage sales.

Alternatively, you should be able to access assistance via government sponsored or not for profit organizations within your own communities.

    • Lidande i ensamhet ökar pressen.

    • Menderita seorang diri hanya menambah tekanan.
  • Lakukan selangkah demi selangkah
  • Lakukan beberapa perubahan sederhana

    • Sofrer sozinho aumenta a pressão.
